San Bassiano Hospital
Collaboration through Telemedicine
Digital Health is the future of healthcare. Topics such as Telemedicine, Telehealth, virtual consultation, healthcare kiosks, remote patient monitoring and mobile applications will play a fundamental role in the future of healthcare treatments. San Bassiano Hospital embarked on an innovative project to create a Competence Centre which will bring the latest digital healthcare developments to the Bassiano del Grappa region.
The San Bassiano Hospital in Bassiano del Grappa was founded in 1993. In more recent years, the Veneto region reorganized its healthcare provision whereby the San Bassiano operates in cooperation with two other hospitals in the Pedemontana area, supporting a population of about 360,000 inhabitants.
The hospital has a Minimally Invasive Surgical department supported by interventional radiology, with a focus on oncology treatments with percutaneous image-guided ablation, in collaboration with the University of Trieste. In 2016, the Bassiano Radiology department performed 155,000 examinations (CR, US, CT, MR, MX).
The Challenge
The digitalization process is an essential element in the hospital’s everyday operations and telemedicine/telehealth is fundamental to future developments. The radiology department sought to fit-out its Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) room with an interactive touch solution equipped with collaborative and video conferencing tools specifically for telemedicine applications in order to establish a Competence Center within the hospital. Similarly, the Operating Rooms (OR) will benefit from technology to enable interactive live surgery whilst the connection with other departments, hospitals and healthcare services in the territory will support tele consultancy. Finally, all other healthcare facilities in the territory are to benefit from a similar overhaul of technology to enable collaborative consultations.
Since the shared content is highly sensitive, the solution must guarantee strict security and offer medical certification with DICOM2020 protocol-technology and be able to easily integrate the existing PACS. For education and documentation, all sessions must be recordable, to be stored and reviewed when necessary.
The NEC Solution
The NEC 65’’ NEC InfinityBoard, together with highly specialised software products is a tailormade fit to the hospital’s requirements. The 65’’ UHD multi-touch screen with InGlass™ Touch technology and a powerful built-in OPS slot-in PC with Windows 10 IoT facilitates interactive collaboration. With the integrated Huddly Camera at an angle of 120°, video conferencing partners are able to see all participants in the room, including the person working on the screen. Two 40W speakers along with a Sennheiser TeamConnect Wireless Tray-M Set system offer perfect audio conditions for video conferencing.
The pre-installed Zoom video conferencing application enables VC sessions to be recorded and real-time annotation facilitates collaboration between virtual teams. mbits’ mRay, a medical certified application for large format touch screens and mobile devices was installed to tailor the solution to the needs of the radiology department. The software offers a specially developed DICOM 2020 protocol technology to deliver first class images in a mobile environment. With this powerful solution, the team is able to share PACS easily, even to smartphones and tablets. To get the full picture, NEC InfinityBoard can be used to swipe through imaging decks during virtual MDT sessions.
